Kashimnagar - A story of traditional products

Kashimnagar - they sale gamcha and moshari, mosquiuto net

Kashimnagar - The name itself a brand :)

The village is situated in Birbhum, West Bengal, India and as per the 2011 Census of India, Kashimnagar had a total population of 9,796 (Source: Wiki). Most of the people of this village produce mosquito net, gamcha (handmade cotton towel) and lungi (A lungi is a long piece of cotton cloth wrapped around the waist and worn by men for daily wear). They started producing these handmade products several generations ago.

I am a person living its neighbouring village and my father was a school teacher of this village and I spent my childhood there. During my childhood I had visited several houses and that time most of them used handloom for preparing cotton mosquito net, gamcha (handmade cotton towel) and lungi (A lungi is a long piece of cotton cloth wrapped around the waist and worn by men for daily wear). But these days they produce mostly nylon mosquito net (buy nylon net and stitched by themselves) and gamcha (handmade cotton towel).

How they generally sell their products?

They still sell the products by feriwala who visit door to door. You may think about what is feriwala, the feriwala is basically a salesman from the same village. The complete process from production to selling involves – 1. People of the village produce the products then they sell to Mohajon (a store owner). 2. The feriwal borrow the products from the Mohajon and sell them in next 24 hours. 3. The feriwala payback the amount to Mohajon after keeping their profit and borrow the products for next 24 hours.

Why I am sharing this message with you?

Many of my childhood friends living in the village who are engaged in this profession. Some of them are feriwala or store-owner or produces these products but the fact is they didn’t see any growth on their traditional business. Because the process of the selling is really poor and the prices are increasing on raw materials. If they didn’t improve the process of selling then definitely they have to switch from the traditional business or close it.

So what we can do now? We can share the message as much as possible on WhatsApp, Facebook and on all social media to help them to sell their products online.

Please also share your comments below about how they can improve the selling process.
